Welcome back 👋

I stumbled upon Figure 2.0's humanoid announcement on X a few weeks back, and it was mind-blowing.

This led me to delve into its founder, Brett Adcock, who transitioned from farming to amassing millions in his 20s, now spearheading the humanoid robot revolution.

Here’s how he gained his Edge 👇

Today’s Insights

  • 🤔 Who is Brett Adcock?

  • 🚜 From Farm to Robots

  • 🏃‍♂️ How Adock Achieved his Success

🤔 Who is Brett Adcock?

Born on April 6, 1986, Adcock was raised on a corn and soybean farm in Moweaqua, Illinois.

This rural upbringing instilled a strong work ethic, resilience, and a practical understanding of how systems operate, from the ground up.

Farming requires planning, innovation, and adaptation to natural variables, skills that are also crucial in technology entrepreneurship.

At 16, Adcock began launching software and online companies.

What did he achieve after his farming years?

Brett Adcock's career took off with Vettery, an AI-powered recruitment platform that reshaped talent acquisition by efficiently matching candidates with employers and minimising bias.

Its success culminated in a $110 million acquisition by The Adecco Group in 2018, setting the stage for Adcock's subsequent, more audacious ventures.

Post-Vettery, Adcock launched Archer Aviation, envisioning a future where electric VTOL aircraft alleviate urban congestion.

This vision not only attracted significant investment, culminating in a $2.7 billion valuation at IPO, but also secured a landmark $1.5 billion deal with United Airlines, highlighting Adcock's prowess in aerospace innovation and market strategy.

But in May 2022 Adcock founded Figure AI, his most ambitious venture yet….

🚜 From Farm to Robots

Adcock's current endeavor, Figure AI, is pioneering general-purpose humanoid robots to tackle labor shortages and weave robotics seamlessly into everyday life.

Amassing over $750 million from investors including Microsoft and Jeff Bezos, this project not only pushes technological boundaries but also aims to redefine human-robot interaction, placing Adcock at the bleeding edge of robotics innovation.

The Figure AI Team Plotting World Domination

The key advantage Figure AI has over many competitors is their approach to hardware. Recognising hardware as a bottleneck, Adcock chose to develop in-house components such as electric motors and sensors for Figure’s robots.

This ensures that the hardware is optimised for their AI models, addressing the common issue where hardware lags behind software advancements in robotics.

🏃‍♂️ How did Adcock achieve all this?

From studying him, there appear to be three key factors.

  1. Vision and Timing

He enters markets at the perfect moment, from eVTOL aircraft with Archer Aviation to humanoid robots with Figure AI.

His focus isn’t just on tech, but on anticipating future needs like urban air mobility and labour automation.

  2. Vision for interdisciplinary innovation

Adcock seamlessly integrates technology across industries. His ventures build on each other, applying innovations from one field to the next.

  3. Adcock is a Master at Learning

Adcock’s ability to learn quickly and deeply is his greatest asset. Like Elon Musk, he builds a knowledge "tree," connecting insights across disciplines to create breakthrough ideas.

 Actionable Takeaway

  • Be obsessed with learning, and approach it as if you are building a tree. Start with the basics as the trunk, then branch out into related fields. Deep, interconnected knowledge fuels innovation.

  • Identify emerging trends and align your projects with future needs. Use deep, interdisciplinary knowledge to innovate and seize opportunities at the right moment.
